After consultation work around the Langney and Friday Street area of Eastbourne, the CBI partnered with Causeway school to create the basis of a new basketball programme adapted to the local needs for basketball development in the area. After a successful free taster programme, the school's staff and CBI decided to promote and form a long term basketball plan for the local community based in Causeway. The club will be linked with Eastbourne Lions basketball club as an exit route pathway for those competitive participants willing to progress.

In order to subsidise the project, the CBI went on to apply for funding through the East Sussex Better together project. We were delighted to find out the funding was allocated for this project and the first phases of development have now been confirmed.

The aim of the project is to provide an introduction to basketball course for the local youth under the age of 15 as a substitute to inactivity or sedentary lifestyle after school hours. The project is free but carefully designed to ensure participants do not take it for granted. We established a compulsory attendance rule and behavioural expectation that will encourage young people to learn basic life skills such as discipline, respect, team work and attention skills. Failure to attend two sessions without a solid excuse will see the participant out of this unique opportunity and placed back at the end of the waiting list to take part again. Additionally, the project offers a unique "ad-on" in the form of a sport leaders course offered to 10 candidates. Finally, we aim to encourage long term existence of this project  through the selection of the 2 sport leaders to take on an official BasketballEngland Level 1 Coach award with the possibility for professional experience and paid work opportunities.

The CBI is excited and proud about this project's potential to make a positive mark in the lives of participants and will do its best to make a maximum impact in the local community. We thank East Sussex Better Together Building Stronger Communities scheme for funding this unique opportunity  in some of the most deprived areas of Eastbourne: Langney and Friday Street.
