The Community Basketball Innovation Project is funded by the Sportivate "innovation fund". The project's target was to deliver 13 basketball programmes across Sussex and engage over 520 new participants in the sport. This funding was secured to target by completion by March 31st 2015.  This success has led to further funding being secured to deliver the girls innovation project in 2015-2016.

The aim is to bring basketball into the community by creating partnership work between local academies, local communities and local clubs, thus creating a new "hub" of basketball in the area.

Each programme is composed of 2 parts:

1) The course delivery of a "Sport leaders" Award (called the Activators Award) typically aimed for 16-21 year olds.

2) The practical delivery by the leaders of mini basketball sessions and games to a group of participants (14+).

The sessions are adapted to participant's experience and skill level and are supervised at all times by highly experienced qualified tutors and coaches.

By learning the skills required to coach the fundamentals of basketball, the leaders are led to understand technical concepts more in depth and learn to take responsibility and articulate a simplified coaching session including fun basketball games to a group of younger aged participants. Incentives such as course leader t-shirts are provided to participants  as well as vouchers to purchase basketball "gear" upon completion of the course. Furthermore, 1 participant per programme will be selected for a subsidised official UKCC L1 coaching course in basketball.

If you are an Academy or a group interested in running this programme in your area for FREE, don’t hesitate to contact our project manager Miguel Tello on tellomiguel9@gmail.com
